YouTube is Testing Two-Person Accounts to Make Premium More Affordable

YouTube is testing a new subscription tier that would allow two people to share a paid account, in an effort to convert free users to paid YouTube Premium accounts.
Moneycontrol reports that the test is being done in India, France, Taiwan, and Hong Kong and allows users to share an account for Premium or Music Premium memberships. To qualify for a shared account, both users must be over 13 years old, have a Google account, and be a part of the same Google family group.
In a statement for Moneycontrol, a YouTube spokesperson confirmed the test, saying “We’re experimenting with new ways to provide greater flexibility and value to our YouTube Premium subscribers, including offering a two-person Premium plan option, allowing two people to share a subscription at a reduced cost.”
A YouTube Premium account offers unlimited ad-free videos, background viewing to keep playing videos while you’re using other apps, and allows users to download videos to watch offline. With YouTube Premium, you’ll also get uninterrupted access to stream music on the YouTube Music app.
In India, the shared YouTube Premium account costs Rs. 219 ($2.60 USD) per month, and a shared YouTube Premium Music account costs Rs. 149 ($1.77 USD).

In the U.S., YouTube offers Individual YouTube Premium accounts for $13.99 per month and Family plans for $22.99 per month. The Family plan allows a user to add up to 5 family members (ages 13+) from one household. A two-person account would make the service more affordable for couples or smaller households that don’t need five accounts.
In March, YouTube introduced Premium Lite, a more affordable option at $7.99 per month. The Lite plan gives users a mostly ad-free viewing experience without the extra benefits of background viewing, video downloads, and access to YouTube Music.
